Motives for British Imperialism

1. Slavery in the 1800's was in decline because the people began to see the immorality of slavery. It was also becoming less profitable. Slavery was not helpful in the times of the industrial revolution, so imperialism in Africa was based on power, trade, and security and it was not based on slavery. Slavery was not beneficial since the rise of the lassez-faire ideas.

2. According to Halstead, the Industrial Revolution did not have an effect on Britain's Imperialism because it had to do with a moral issue. I agree with this because I think that this would be against many people's morals. I also think that the Industrial Revolution affected the abolishing of slavery because most slaves were let go during this time and they realized when Imperialism started that the slaves were not allowing them to make any money and they were not helping Britain's economy.

3. Halstead's belief differs from other economic belief because he has a different opinion that consists of different values. He thinks that imperialism has the same background affect in definition. The reasons for what matters differ the most.

4. British imperialism cannot be described as one reason or one kind of reasoning. It is a combination of "national security, protecting free trade, protecting commercial routes,competition for markets and spheres of influence, settlement, colonization, diplomacy, andideology." It can be examined in pieces until a picture is developed.
